Every Indian agency owner I know has had the same Hootsuite moment. You sign up for the trial, the product is genuinely good, and then you open the billing page, multiply by the exchange rate, and realise the tool costs more than what you charge two of your clients combined.
This post does the rupee math properly, using figures taken directly from each vendor's own pricing page rather than the American listicles. And it flags one cost that no "Hootsuite alternatives" article I've read mentions: the GST you pay on a foreign software subscription.
What does Hootsuite actually cost?
Straight from hootsuite.com/plans, in its own words: "Hootsuite pricing is tiered based on your plan type. Paid plans start at $99 for a Standard plan, $199 for a Professional plan, and range up to $399 for an Advanced plan."
Two structural details matter far more than the headline numbers:
- It's per seat. The page states plainly that "Hootsuite plans are sold per user (or 'seat'), so you can add as many users as your organization needs." Its comparison table lists user seats as "1+" on every paid tier. Your bill multiplies by headcount, not by clients.
- Approvals are on the top tier. Standard covers "up to 10 social media accounts"; Professional adds unlimited accounts. "Review and approve content with your team" appears only under Advanced — the $399 line. For an agency, approval is the workflow, so the relevant price is the highest one.
The page also carries a footnote worth reading: prices are "based on annual billing, but do not include applicable taxes." Monthly billing costs more than the annual rate, and the trial has limits — Hootsuite notes trial accounts have daily posting caps of 10–20 posts per organisation, and bulk scheduling is unavailable during it. So a two-week trial won't tell you how the tool behaves on a month-in-a-day batching workflow.
Honesty note on currency: Hootsuite's plan cards inject the currency symbol client-side, so I could not verify from the page source what figure an Indian visitor's card renders. The dollar amounts quoted above are the ones Hootsuite states server-side in its own FAQ. Check the live page from your own browser before budgeting — that's the number you'll actually be charged.
The 18% nobody puts in the comparison
When an Indian business buys software from a foreign supplier, that's an import of service. The liability generally shifts to you: as ClearTax puts it, "the service recipient in India is liable to pay GST under the reverse charge mechanism", and "for most professional services, GST is usually charged at 18% on the value of the service received."
The good news is that "such GST paid shall be available to the service recipient as an input tax credit, subject to other applicable terms" — so if you're GST-registered, you claim it back. The catch is cash flow: you fund the 18% now and recover it in the return cycle. And if you're not registered, the same source notes an unregistered entity importing services for business purposes must obtain registration under Section 24(iii) of the CGST Act before it can pay the reverse-charge GST at all. A ₹15,000-a-month tool subscription can be the thing that drags a small studio into registration. The rupee math at Indian agency scale
Take a realistic mid-size Indian agency: 12 clients, roughly 3 channels each (36 social accounts), 4 people who need logins. Same scenario I used in the SocialPilot alternatives comparison, so the two posts are directly comparable. Converting at about ₹95.5 to the dollar (checked 2 August 2026):
| Tool / plan | Billing unit | Monthly cost for 36 accounts, 4 users | Client approvals? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hootsuite Standard | $99 per user/mo | ≈ ₹37,800 — but capped at 10 accounts, so it doesn't fit | No |
| Hootsuite Professional | $199 per user/mo | ≈ ₹76,000 | No |
| Hootsuite Advanced | $399 per user/mo | ≈ ₹1,52,400 | Yes |
| Buffer Team | $10 per channel/mo, unlimited users | ≈ ₹34,400 (less above 10 channels) | Limited |
| SocialPilot Premium | ₹6,000/mo + ₹200 per extra account/user | ≈ ₹7,400 | Yes |
| My Digital Sevak | Flat, in rupees | from ₹999 | Yes |
Add 18% reverse-charge GST on the dollar-billed rows and Hootsuite Advanced is a ₹1.8 lakh monthly cash outflow before you recover the credit. Sources for the comparison rows: Buffer's pricing page ("$10/month per channel", with channels above 10 costing less per channel) and SocialPilot's pricing page served to India (₹2,000 Standard for 10 accounts, ₹6,000 Premium for 30 accounts with Client Approval, extra accounts and users ₹200/month each).
Put that against the market. A typical Indian retainer sits somewhere between ₹25,000 and ₹80,000 a month, as covered in what to charge for social media management in India. Hootsuite Advanced for a four-person team costs roughly what two clients pay you. That's not a tool being greedy — it's a tool priced for agencies billing in dollars, sold into a market billing in rupees.
What are you actually giving up?
Being fair matters more than being persuasive, so: Hootsuite is not overpriced for what it is. It's an enterprise social suite, and the things it does that cheaper tools genuinely don't include social listening across a wide surface, a unified inbox with automated reply routing, message assignment to team members, trend forecasting, and governance features like SSO on Enterprise. If you're a 40-person agency servicing listed companies with compliance requirements, those line items are the product and the price is defensible.
But run the honest audit of your own month. For most Indian agencies under 20 people, the actual daily jobs are: plan the calendar, get the client to approve, publish on time, pull the numbers, send the report, raise the invoice, chase the payment. Social listening is a feature people demo and then never open. You are, in practice, paying enterprise prices for a calendar.
Which alternative should an Indian agency pick?
- You just need to publish, cheaply, to many accounts. SocialPilot at ₹2,000 (or ₹6,000 with approvals) is India-priced and hard to beat. Zoho Social's agency tiers are worth a look too — Zoho is India-headquartered and its page states pricing readjusts by region, though the figures render dynamically so check your own INR number.
- Your team is large but your channel count is small. Buffer Team's unlimited-users-per-channel model inverts Hootsuite's per-seat economics. Expensive per channel, free per human.
- You're only just outgrowing free tools. Don't jump to a paid suite yet — read Meta Business Suite vs scheduling tools first and make sure you've actually hit the ceiling.
- Scheduling was never your bottleneck. Then no scheduler on this list is your answer, cheap or expensive.
What ₹999 actually buys
Here's the thing I got wrong for two years running my own agency. I kept comparing schedulers, when the scheduler was the one part of my month that already worked.
What didn't work was everything between: the calendar in a spreadsheet, approvals chased on WhatsApp, reports rebuilt by hand in Canva at month-end, invoices raised in separate accounting software, GST and TDS reconciled in a third place, and no single screen that could tell me the true status of a client. Hootsuite Advanced would have solved none of it — at ₹1.5 lakh a month.
My Digital Sevak was built for that gap, for my own agency, before it was a product: content calendar and Instagram scheduling, a mobile portal where clients approve on their phone, monthly reports that assemble themselves, and GST-compliant invoicing with Razorpay payments and TDS tracking — one login, priced in rupees, from ₹999 a month. No exchange rate, no reverse-charge GST, no per-seat multiplication when you hire your fifth person. It's what we use to run agencies from Lucknow to Kochi.
The fair caveat: if you need enterprise social listening, a multi-agent unified inbox and SSO, we are not that product and you should stay on a suite that is.
How do you switch without breaking the calendar?
- Switch at a month boundary, never mid-campaign. Your reporting cycle stays clean.
- Export your scheduled queue first, as a CSV or at minimum a screenshot of the next 30 days. Queues rarely migrate between tools.
- Reconnect accounts through the official Meta flow, not by sharing passwords — see auto-posting without password sharing.
- Keep the old tool alive for one overlapping month. A silent publish failure during migration costs a client relationship worth far more than the subscription.
- Check your annual commitment. If you're mid-term on annual billing, you're paying for the overlap anyway — plan the switch for renewal month.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Hootsuite cost in India?
Hootsuite's own pricing page states that paid plans start at $99 for Standard, $199 for Professional and up to $399 for Advanced. Those are per user per month on annual billing and exclude applicable taxes, so an Indian buyer should budget for the exchange rate and GST on top.
Do I pay GST on a Hootsuite subscription in India?
Importing a service from a foreign supplier generally puts the GST liability on the Indian recipient under reverse charge, commonly at 18 percent. A GST-registered business can usually claim it back as input tax credit, but it is still cash out of the account each month.
What is the cheapest Hootsuite alternative for an Indian agency?
Tools that bill in rupees win on cost. SocialPilot's India pricing is ₹2,000 a month for 10 accounts and ₹6,000 for 30 accounts with client approval. My Digital Sevak starts at ₹999 a month and adds approvals, reports and GST invoicing rather than scheduling alone.
All prices were taken from each vendor's own pricing page on 2 August 2026 and converted at approximately ₹95.5 to the dollar. Software pricing and exchange rates move — verify on the live pages before you commit. I'm an agency founder, not a tax professional; confirm the GST treatment of foreign subscriptions with your CA.
