Is Facebook still worth it for Indian brands in 2026? The honest, data-led answer

Yes, but not the way most brands still use it. Facebook reaches about 403 million people in India through ads, and that number is still growing. What has collapsed is organic Page reach: average engagement is around 0.15% per post. Treat Facebook as a paid-reach, WhatsApp-lead and community channel. Don't give it a separate content calendar.

Every agency owner in India knows this meeting. The client, usually the founder and usually over 40, says: "Everyone I know is on Facebook. Why are we only doing Instagram?" The junior account manager says "Facebook is dead, sir," and loses the argument, because the client's own feed is full of people they know.

Both of them are half right. Here is what the numbers actually say, and the answer I give clients now. It holds up better than either of those replies.

How many Indians can you still reach on Facebook?

More than most people assume. DataReportal's Digital 2026: India report takes these figures from Meta's and Google's own advertising tools, measured in October 2025:

Platform (India)Ad reach, Oct 2025Change in 12 months
YouTube500 million+1.8%
Instagram481 million+22.9%
Facebook403 million+8.1%

Two caveats before you paste this into a pitch deck. First, ad reach isn't the same as unique users. It's the audience Meta says an advertiser can target, and it can include duplicate or inactive accounts. Second, the growth tells the real story. Instagram added almost three times as many reachable people as Facebook did. And Facebook's figure actually fell by about 1.2% between July and October 2025.

So Facebook isn't dying in India. It's a huge audience that's barely growing, and the attention of younger urban users has moved to Instagram and YouTube. For a brand whose customers are 35+, in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns, or buying for a family, that matters a lot. In our own client accounts, that's the audience that still comments, shares to family groups and calls the number on the Page.

Why does organic Facebook feel dead?

Because for business Pages, it mostly is. Socialinsider's 2026 Facebook benchmarks analysed 25 million posts from more than 130,000 business Pages between January 2024 and December 2025:

Engagement rate there is measured against follower count. On a Page with 5,000 followers, 0.15% works out to about seven or eight reactions, comments and shares per post. That's why the junior account manager thinks Facebook is dead. They are measuring the one part of it that is.

There's also a newer rule. On 13 March 2026 Meta published Rewarding Original Creators on Facebook. It says content "filmed or produced directly by a creator or owner of a Profile or Page" gets preferential distribution. Duplicative posts, minor edits of someone else's content and re-uploads get pushed down. Accounts that post mainly unoriginal content can be made "non-recommendable". The same standard applies to Pages. The Page that filled its feed with trending memes and forwarded videos is now losing reach for it.

The good news hidden in that update: a brand that shoots its own Reels is exactly what Meta now wants. Meta says views and watch time on original Reels roughly doubled in the second half of 2025. If your client already pays for an Instagram shoot, sharing those same Reels to Facebook costs almost nothing, and it's the content Facebook now favours.

Where Facebook still earns its place

Take away organic Page posting and Facebook still does five jobs better than anything else for an Indian brand:

  1. Paid reach, cheaply bundled. Facebook and Instagram ads run from the same Meta Ads Manager. Leaving Facebook placements switched on usually costs the client nothing extra and reaches the 35+ audience Instagram under-delivers. For most local clients, Facebook's value sits in the ad account, not on the Page.
  2. Click-to-WhatsApp ads. An ad that opens a WhatsApp chat is the most natural lead format for Indian buyers, and Facebook is one of the placements those ads run on. If the client's sales team works on WhatsApp, and in India it usually does, this alone justifies the channel. We covered the setup in our WhatsApp Business API guide for agencies.
  3. Groups. Housing societies, parents' groups, city buy-and-sell groups, alumni and trade communities still run on Facebook. A brand manager who takes part in the right groups, without spamming them, gets reach no Page post will.
  4. Trust checks. Before an older customer calls a clinic, a coaching institute or a builder, they often check the Facebook Page for reviews, recent activity and a real phone number. A Page that went quiet in 2023 costs you that call.
  5. Events and local announcements. Openings, exhibitions, admissions days and offers with a date on them still spread through Facebook shares among family and neighbourhood networks.

How should an agency run Facebook inside a retainer?

Don't sell a separate Facebook calendar. Clients rarely see value in it, and the engagement data above won't back you up. Run it as part of the Instagram workflow, with a few Facebook-specific habits:

Agency management dashboard in My Digital Sevak with each client's Facebook and Instagram work planned in one workspace
One client workspace for both Meta platforms, so Facebook upkeep is a line on the same calendar, not a second job.

On pricing: fold basic Facebook upkeep into the Instagram retainer and charge for ad management separately. That's easier to defend than a Facebook package, and it matches where the value actually is. Our guide on what to charge for social media management in India covers how to structure the ad-management fee.

If you publish natively through Meta's own tools, Meta Business Suite versus a scheduling tool goes through the trade-offs for agencies managing several clients.

What to tell the client who keeps asking

Here is the version I use, more or less word for word:

"Your customers are on Facebook, you're right. But Facebook barely shows business Page posts to them for free any more. So we'll do three things. We'll keep your Page active with the same videos we make for Instagram. We'll answer every comment and message. And when we run ads, Facebook will be included, because that's where it reaches people your age and older. You'll see Facebook's results as a separate line in every report."

That answer takes the client's instinct seriously, doesn't promise organic miracles, and costs the agency almost no extra production. It works whether the client is a school in Kanpur or a furniture showroom in Pune. For a founder deciding whether to stay on Facebook at all, our small-business social media guide sets it alongside the other channels.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook dead in India?

No. Meta's own advertising tools put Facebook's ad reach in India at about 403 million people in late 2025, up 8.1% in a year, per DataReportal. What has faded is organic reach for business Pages. The audience is still there; reaching it for free is what has become hard.

Should a small Indian business post on Facebook at all?

Keep a complete, active Page, because customers check it and ads need it. But don't build a separate content calendar for it. Share your original Instagram posts, reply to every comment and message, and put real effort into Facebook only when you run ads or have an active local community.

Can I cross-post Instagram Reels to Facebook?

Yes, if the Reel is your own footage. Meta's March 2026 update says original content, filmed or produced by the Page owner, gets preferential distribution, while re-uploads and lightly edited third-party clips are deprioritised. Your own Reel shared to your Facebook Page counts as original. A reposted meme does not.

What type of Facebook post gets the most engagement?

In Socialinsider's 2026 benchmark of 25 million posts from over 130,000 business Pages, plain status posts led at 0.20% engagement, followed by albums and Reels at 0.18%. Link posts came last at 0.05%. So a sharp text post often beats a post with a link on Facebook.
